At a recently held virtual conference organised by TM Forum, Reliance Jio Infocomm founder Mukesh Ambani has reiterated the telco’s goal of making India 2G free.

Earlier in July 2020, the telco had mentioned that around 300 million subscribers in India are trapped in the 2G era and are limited by their feature phones.

While Jio wants to eliminate 2G from Indian telecom networks, the other two incumbent operators, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea hold a contrasting view. Both Airtel and Vi have a large customer base on 2G network.

That said, confronted with heightened competition from Jio, the two telcos are working towards reducing dependency on the 2G network. Reliance Jio only offers 4G services and claims to be ready with 5G technology.

At present, 51 per cent of Airtel’s customer base is on 2G/3G network, while for Vodafone Idea it is 63 per cent. As per GSMA, 12-13 per cent of users will continue to use 2G handsets till 2025 in India.
