Reliance Jio Infocomm Private Limited (RJI) has approached the government for a unified licence, say news reports.

This development follows the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)?s guidelines for existing internet service providers holding a broadband wireless access (BWA) licence to migrate to a unified licence for offering voice services.

As per the new unified licencing guidelines, RJI will have to pay an additional fee of Rs 16.58 billion for acquiring a unified licence. At present, RJI holds BWA spectrum across the country and plans to roll out 4G services in select circles. The company is in the process of testing voice calls on its long term evolution networks.
