Reliance Jio has increased the ring duration for outgoing calls from its network to 25 seconds from 20 seconds earlier.
The move comes after Bharti Airtel had recently written to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) stating that it would be forced to cut ring time for outgoing calls to 20 seconds, same as that of Jio’s. Bharti Airtel had urged TRAI to ask Jio to increase its ring duration, alleging that Jio is manipulating the interconnection usage charge (IUC) regime, through its reduced ring duration.
However, Jio has rejected the allegation, saying 15-20 seconds is a globally followed norm.
Meanwhile, the TRAI has recently issued a consultation paper to seek industry views on maximum ring time required to optimally use network resources. It has also reportedly asked telcos to arrive at a consensus on the matter before conclusion of the consultation process.
