According to a recent study by Kotak Institutional Equities, Reliance Jio had around 87 million inactive 4G users in June 2020 out of a total revenue-generating customer base of 397 million. In contrast, Bharti Airtel’s active user base during the month was 10 per cent higher than its paying user base.
Jio and Airtel’s active or `VLR’ mobile user base in June were similar at 310 million and 311 million respectively. However, as per recent investor disclosures by both telcos, Jio’s base of paying mobile users at 397 million was 28 per cent higher than its June base of active users, while in Airtel’s case, it was 10 per cent lower at 280 million.
The study further highlighted that as per recent TRAI data Jio has a very high number of only sometimes-on SIM (users) on its network.
