As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost a whopping 0.75 million, 1.69 million, and 1.41 million subscribers month-on-month during July 2024. Meanwhile, the user base of Jio, Airtel, and Vi shrank to 475.76 million, 387.32 million and 215.88 million respectively.

Separately, Jio further consolidated its market leadership in the wireline space in July 2024. TRAI data showed that Jio added 0.48 million wireline users, boosting its landline user base to 13.67 million. Meanwhile, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 0.134 million wireline users. In addition, Airtel added 0.136 million users, boosting its wireline user base to around 9.19 million.

Further, the month of July 2024 witnessed Jio narrowing its customer market share to 40.68 per cent (from 40.71 per cent in June 2024), while Airtel’s market share fell to 33.12 (from 33.23 per cent in June 2024). In addition, Vi’s narrowed further to 18.46 per cent as against 18.56 per cent the previous month.

Besides, TRAI data showed that Vi lost, while Airtel and Jio gained customers in rural India. Vi lost 0.97 million in these geographies. In addition, Airtel and Jio gained 0.2 million and 0.11 million respectively. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density decreased marginally to 83.32 per cent in July 2024 from 83.45 per cent in June 2024.

During July 2024, 13.68 million users submitted requests for mobile number portability (MNP), increasing the cumulative requests from 997.44 million by end-June 2024 to 1011.13 million by end-July 2024. The wireline user base increased from 35.11 million at the end of June 2024 to 35.56 million at the end of July 2024, registering a net increase of 0.45 million.
