Reliance Jio and Facebook are reportedly exploring the possibility of building a multipurpose ‘super app.’

The app is learned to be built along the lines of the China-based app WeChat, by leveraging the Facebook’s messenger platform WhatsApp, and its user base in India.

The two companies would pitch in for funding, technical expertise and domain expertise required for the project.

The initial idea for the app is to build a communication platform enabling users to perform other functions. To this end, the application will be connected to other Reliance-owned platforms including retail, e-commerce and digital payment.  The app would be a social media, digital payments, gaming and flight and hotel bookings app all rolled into one.

As per industry sources, the discussions have been put on hold citing the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is learned that Morgan Stanley has been brought in as an investment banker.
