As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel gained 1.7 million and 1.52 million subscribers respectively in December 2022, while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost a whopping 2.47 million subscribers during the period under consideration. Meanwhile, during December 2022, the user base of Jio and Airtel expanded to 424.51 million and 367.60 million, respectively.

In addition, TRAI data showed that total wireless subscribers decreased for the third time in four months – falling to 1.142 billion at the end of December 2022, from 1.143 billion in November 2022, dragged by a fall in rural users. Rural wireless user base fell to 515.89 million in December 2022 from 516.45 million in November 2022, while wireless subscriptions in urban areas grew marginally to 627.03 million in December 2022 from 626.6 million in November 2022.

Further, Jio consolidated its market leadership in landline services in December 2022 with 0.29 million new subscribers, taking its landline base to 8.4 million, while Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) added 13,189 subscribers to its landline base. On the other hand, Airtel added 0.14 million subscribers to end at 6.7 million total subscribers by the end of December 2022.

Besides, as per TRAI data, Jio and Airtel widened their wireless customer market shares to 37.14 per cent (from 36.99 per cent) and 32.16 per cent (from 32.03 per cent) respectively, while Vi’s share narrowed to 21.11 per cent (from 21.33 per cent).
