As per the telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,202.57 million at the end of June 2021 to 1,209.45 million at the end of July 2021, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.57 per cent.

Further, subscription in urban areas increased from 666.1 million at the end of Jun-21 to 670.75 million at the end of July 2021. The rural subscription also increased from 536.47 million to 538.70 million during the same period.

The overall tele-density in India increased from 88.07 per cent at the end of Jun 2021 to 88.51 per cent at the end of July 2021. The urban tele-density increased from 140.86 per cent at the end of Jun-21 to 141.62 per cent at the end of July 2021 and rural tele-density also increased from 60.10 per cent to 60.33 per cent during the same period.

Moreover, the number of broadband subscribers increased from 792.78 million to 808.60 million during the period, marking a monthly growth rate of 2 per cent.

Among operators, Reliance Jio’s wireless user base increased by over 6.51 million subscribers in July 2021, taking its total subscriber base to 443.2 million. Bharti Airtel added of 1.94 million subscribers in July 2021, taking its total subscriber base to 354 million. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea Limited lost 1.43 million subscribers in the month, while state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 1.01 million subscribers, taking their total subscriber base to 271.9 million and 114.33 million respectively.

Consequently, Reliance Jio’s market share by subscribers stood at 37.34 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel at 29.83 per cent. Vodafone Idea’s market share stood at 22.91 per cent, followed by BSNL at 9.64 per cent.
