In line with its new focus on GSM, Reliance Communication has applied to DoT for radio frequency in the 1800 MHz band (GSM band) for operating mobile networks in 14 circles across India. The applications have been made under the unified access service licence. As the company already has a nationwide CDMA network, investment in GSM infrastructure will involve an incremental investment of 20-30 per cent, with the total estimated to touch Rs 80 billion. In February 2006, the company had applied for GSM spectrum for the Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Uttar Pradesh (East and West) and Jammu & Kashmir markets.
