RCOM and Bharti Airtel have announced their plans to improve communications links between the Northeast and the rest of the country by deploying terrestrial fibre optic routes through Bangladesh. The two operators have submitted a joint proposal to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission seeking a corridor through the country to reach India’s isolated north-eastern region. In return, the two operators are offering Bangladesh access to their undersea cable network as an alternative to the lone submarine cable from Southeast Asia. Telecom services are currently offered in the Northeast through very small aperture terminals at a higher price.
