The Rajya Sabha has passed the Indian Telecommunications Bill 2023, a day after the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha. The bill was introduced by the government in the lower house of the Parliament on December 18, 2023.
The bill, when it gets enacted into law, will bring regulatory changes, such as an authorisation regime, clarity on the assignment of satellite spectrum, and so on. The new bill also seeks to keep over-the-top (OTT) applications or internet-based communication applications, such as Gmail, WhatsApp, Signal, etc away from the purview of the proposed law.
The bill will become a law once it secures the President’s assent.
