Rahul Khullar has been appointed as chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Khullar takes over from J.S. Sarma, who retired on May 14, 2012, after completing a three-year stint as TRAI?s chairman. Prior to this, Khullar was serving as commerce secretary. He served the Prime Minister?s Office between 1985 and 1990 and joined the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2004.

J.S. Deepak to head committee on 2G auction

The government has appointed J.S. Deepak as convener of the committee constituted to oversee the design and process of the upcoming 2G spectrum auction. The committee also has representatives from the Department of Commerce, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, the Department of Economic Affairs, the Planning Commission and the Department of Telecommunications. Deepak, who is currently serving as joint secretary in the Department of Commerce, was entrusted with a similar task of conducting auctions for 3G and broadband wireless access spectrum in 2010.

SSTL appoints COO for Andhra Pradesh circle

Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL) has appointed Aasheesh Verma as chief operating officer (COO) for the Andhra Pradesh circle. He will be responsible for driving SSTL?s business growth in the service area and will report to Cheenu Seshadri, COO, south and west regions, SSTL. Prior to his appointment, Verma was heading the telesales division at Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL).

BSNL appoints K.C.G.K. Pillai as director, finance

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has appointed K.C.G.K. Pillai as director, finance. The position was vacant for three years following the retirement of S.D. Saxena. Prior to his new role, Pillai was principal general manager, finance, BSNL. He also worked with the Department of Telecommunications in the Uttar Pradesh (East and West), Gujarat and Maharashtra circles, besides holding senior managerial positions at BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited.

TATA DOCOMO, the unified brand of TTSL, has appointed Pravir Kumar as operations head for the Odisha circle. Prior to this, Kumar was leading the service provider?s operations in the Bihar and Jharkhand circles.

Tekelec appoints MD for India and South Asia

US-based global provider of communication network software and systems Tekelec has appointed Nitin Arora as managing director (MD) for India and South Asia. He will be responsible for business and sales activities in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Prior to this, Arora was working with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), as head of sales. He led its core networks business in India.

HCL Infosystems appoints president, enterprise solutions

HCL Infosystems Limited has appointed Neeraj Jaitley as president of the enterprise solutions division. In this role, Jaitley will lead the company?s B2B businesses and will report to Harsh Chitale, chief executive officer, HCL Infosystems. Prior to joining HCL, Jaitley was vice-president and business head, cloud services, Wipro Technologies.

Telenor chairman resigns

Chairman of Norway-based Telenor, Harald Norvik, has submitted his resignation to the board of directors. Earlier, the Norwegian government, which owns 54 per cent stake in the Telenor Group, expressed lack of confidence in Norvik?s decision to sell Telenor?s stake in Norway-based commercial channel TV2 in January 2012.

Angira Agrawal to head NEC?s cloud business in India

Japan-based NEC has appointed Angira Agrawal as head and associate vice-president (VP) for its cloud business in India. He will be responsible for defining the overall strategy for the company?s cloud offering and go-to-market partnerships, and its cloud platform capabilities. Prior to joining NEC, Agrawal was working with Tata Communications as general manager, where he was managing a strategic joint investment and go-to-market partnership for the company?s cloud services; he also served as head of software-as-a-service (SaaS) and enterprise mobility.

Polaris appoints VP for sales and business development

Polaris Wireless, a location-based wireless solution provider, has appointed Srinivas Varadarajan as VP of sales and business development for the Asia region. He will be based at Polaris? regional headquarters in India and will be responsible for expanding its strategic partnerships and client base in the region. Prior to joining Polaris, Varadarajan was serving as global head of the location-based service business at NSN, where he was responsible for establishing and growing relationships with major telecom operators across Asia.
