Qualcomm is reportedly in talks with network services provider GTL to form a joint venture (JV) for rolling out broadband wireless access services in India if it wins spectrum in the ongoing auctions.

The San Diego-headquartered company plans to combine its technological prowess with GTL’s tower infrastructure and expertise in network planning and deployment to offer time division long term evolution technology. According to sources, Qualcomm will own a 74 per cent stake in the JV through a holding company in Asia, while the Indian promoters will hold the remaining 26 per cent.

Further, GTL will invest around Rs 4 billion for a 24 per cent holding and will have its nominees on the board of the new entity. Tulip Telecom, a firm offering data services and information technology solutions, is also likely to have a 2 per cent stake.
