The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has urged the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to enforce mandatory biometric Aadhaar verification for mobile connections across India, during a recent review meeting in the telecom sector. This initiative aims to tackle cybercrime and digital fraud while controlling the misuse of national telecom resources.
Further, the PMO emphasised the need for strict action against SIM card vendors who violate legal regulations.
In response, the DoT informed that, it is actively utilising artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools to generate digital intelligence, which is shared with law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to take action against these non-compliant sellers. Additionally, the DoT has developed AI technologies to identify mobile connections acquired through fraudulent or forged documents. Once detected, these connections, along with any associated telecom resources and handsets used in illegal activities, are being eliminated by the government.
