The Personal Data Protection Bill is expected to be tabled in the Budget session to be held 2021. The Personal Data Protection Bill proposes to put restriction on use of personal data without explicit consent of citizens. Further, it mandates storage of critical data of individuals by internet companies within the country while sensitive data can be transferred overseas only after explicit consent of the data owner.

In addition, the bill proposes a penalty of up to Rs 150 million and up to three-year of imprisonment in case of violations.

Earlier in December 2019, the cabinet had approved the draft bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha in February 2019 and has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee of both the Houses for examination and report.
