Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communications and IT has said that 130,728 telecom towers are yet to comply with self-certification norms on the health-related effects of electromagnetic emissions even after a six-month deadline extension.
Prior to this, the industry was required to self-certify each of their towers by May 15, 2010 and submit the same to the Telecom Engineering and Resource Monitoring Cells of the Department of Telecommunications. This deadline was later extended to November 15, 2010.
Pilot added that all operators will be charged Rs 0.5 million as penalty for each noncompliant base station. As of December 30, 2010, operators had set up 562,174 base transceiver stations mounted on towers for mobile communications.
