In written communication, the GSM Association (GSMA) has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to outline a future course of action for bringing in transparency and certainty in the telecom sector. The move follows the Supreme Court?s (SC) order to revoke 122 telecom licences.

GSMA has stated that the regulator must ensure that the new process should incorporate principles of fairness, transparency and certainty so that future investments in the sector are not impacted.

After the SC?s verdict, two foreign companies ? Bahrain Telecom and Etisalat ? have announced their exit from the Indian telecom space, while Loop Telecom has requested the government to return the licence fee paid by the company along with interest. These developments have put the existing investments in the mobile network infrastructure in jeopardy.

Further, GSMA has stated that the uncertainty generated by the current legal situation may also deter investments in 3G and 4G networks.
