According to Infonetics Research, the optical transport network (OTN) switching segment is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of about 20 per cent from 2013 to 2018. Further, Worldwide overall OTN revenue stood at $8 billion in 2013, accounting for 66 per cent of all optical network hardware spending.

The OTN switching segment grew by 37 per cent in 2013. And the market for packet-optical transport systems (P-OTS) equipment totaled $1.7 billion in 2013. The revenue was split equally between metro edge and metro regional P-OTS equipment gear. Further, the P-OTS revenue grew by 32 per cent between the second half of 2012 and the second half of 2013.

The growth in the OTN switching market was driven by higher investments by service provides for integrating wavelength-division multiplexing, OTN switching and 100G coherent technology in the core.
