Operators winning spectrum in the forthcoming 2G spectrum auction are likely to be allowed to swap spectrum within the same band by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), say news reports.

Swapping of spectrum will allow operators to consolidate or strengthen their respective networks in areas where they lack adequate spectrum. To exchange spectrum with each other, operators wining spectrum will have to seek approvals and clearances from the Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing (WPC) of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

DoT has assured operators that the process of frequency reconfiguration within the same band could be carried out once the entire spectrum held by the operators is liberalised. It has also indicated that the operators will not have to pay additional fees for interchanging frequencies within the same band.
