The government is continuing its efforts to make the country?s telecom networks fully secure.

In this context, the Ministry of Home Affairs has held several rounds of consultation with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), say news reports.

As a result, DoT is to ask telecom operators to establish systems wherein the location of any subscriber can be tracked while they make a call. This information is then to be given to Indian security agencies.

Operators are required to do so by May 31, 2012. The deadline to establish such systems in Jammu and Kashmir is March 31, 2012.

The objective is to track down the location from where the call had originated with an accuracy of 30-90 per cent in an area of 50-300 meters depending on the population and area.

Prior to this, the Government earmarked Rs 8 billion towards establishing the National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC), an internet scanning agency.

The NCCC is expected to monitor all the traffic passing through Internet service providers in the country, as well as international internet gateways.

In case it registers a potential security threat, it will issue actionable alerts to government departments.

Meanwhile, DoT had asked Idea Cellular and Vodafone India to provide IB with details of the subscribers using internet on their mobile phones.
