According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the empowered group of ministers (EGoM) should examine the option of asking incumbent operators to pay for spectrum held by them beyond 6.2 MHz.
DoT, in a presentation before the EGoM, has suggested that irrespective of the methodology the government opts for to impose a one-time spectrum charge on existing operators, the operators holding excess spectrum should be charged for the same.
The EGoM is currently examining the issue of whether incumbent operators should be asked to pay the auction-determined price for the spectrum that they currently hold. The 2G licences of a few of the existing operators are expected to come up for renewal in 2013.
