Operators have requested the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to permit them to continue the current practice of telecom network deployment, say news reports.

This development is owing to the absence of a test laboratory which was expected to be established by end-2012. The laboratory was expected to be used to provide clearances to imported telecom equipment from April 2013 onwards.

The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore was to establish the testing laboratory in consultation with Huawei to detect spy software present in imported telecom gear. Earlier, DoT had amended the existing licence pertaining to network security. As per the amendments, operators had been mandated to install telecom equipment certified as ?safe? by an authorised testing lab in the country from April 2013 onwards.
