Operators have told the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) that they will implement the rules to curb unsolicited calls within six weeks of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) allocating a landline number series to telemarketing companies.
Operators have asked for a maximum of six weeks to make changes in their network to meet TRAI?s new rules on unsolicited calls and SMSes.
In December 2010, TRAI issued recommendations to curb telemarketing calls and SMSs.
It has recommended a fine of up to Rs 25 billion on telemarketing companies for making unsolicited calls or sending such SMSes to a consumer registered in the national customer preference list, a modified version of TRAI?s do-not-call registry list.
However, the recommendations have not been implemented so far as DoT is yet to resolve technical and security issues involved in the allocation of an identifiable number series, as recommended by TRAI.
After holding deliberations with operators, DoT is now working on new a number series for telemarketing companies. However, no timeframe has been specified for the same.
