Nokia is to launch its first TD-SCDMA handset in partnership with China Mobile by the end of 2009 in China. The 6788 handset, which is targeted at the high-end market, will run on Nokia’s Symbian platform. Although Nokia is the leading handset vendor globally, its pace of development in the TD-SCDMA segment has lagged behind that of Samsung Electronics, Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics and Motorola due to delays in chip development.

With Sony Ericsson having announced that it will launch TDSCDMA models in 2010, all the top five handset vendors have joined the TD-SCDMA race. Meanwhile, Nokia has recorded sales of 30.5 million handsets in the Chinese market in the third quarter of 2009, accounting for 28 per cent of its global sales and making China its single biggest market.
