Britain-based telecom operator, New Call Telecom has acquired a 70 per cent stake in the mobile messaging service provider Nimbuzz reportedly for around $175 million. Post the acquisition, New Call plans to use the Nimbuzz platform to provide new applications along with its home broadband and Wi-Fi services. In order to lower its international call tariffs, it further plans to integrate the business of Nimbuzz with its international calling business.
The Indian headquartered Nimbuzz currently offers a VoIP service called ?NimbuzzOut? which allows users to make low-cost international and long distance domestic calls from your mobile or PC to other mobiles and landlines, using Nimbuzz Credits. Along with this, Nimbuzz also provides a cross-platform calls and messaging application across various operating systems on mobile phones.
Moreover, New Call is planning to deal with the providers of fixed-line broadband in India. It is reportedly aiming at an acquisition in the Wi-Fi segment in India which is currently waiting for the approval from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).
