Nepal Telecom (NT) is planning to issue a tender to upgrade its fixed line network to a next generation network (NGN). This will enable the operator to provide advanced services including high speed internet. Work on the upgrade will be started in 2010 simultaneously in all 73 districts where NT has a fixed line network. In the initial phase, the state-owned operator will roll out fibre optic cables to augment its copper wire public switched telephone network (PSTN), providing additional capacity and increased bandwidth for data and voice services. New remote switching units will also be installed to reduce network congestion. According to NT, the NGN will help reduce the operating costs on the PSTN by up to 30 per cent.
