Nelco, a Tata Group company, has withdrawn its application for offering satellite communication services to consumers. The company now plans to apply for a new licence under the new Indian Space Policy, 2023.

The previous application for global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) licence, sent to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has since been repealed by the company.

The new space policy will outline all the relevant permits required for the company. According to P.J. Nath, managing director and chief executive officer, Nelco, the company also aims at getting into the consumer market where it has not been possible to go with satellite communication because of technical or other issues. The changes in the satellite sector may be based on the consultation paper from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
