NEC Technologies India has secured a contract from the Airport Authority of India to provide a biometric-based boarding platform across four airports in India.

According to the company, the platform has been developed with the government’s DigiYatra initiative in mind and is aimed at smoothening airport operations and enhancing passenger travel experience. The platform also includes facial recognition systems.

This project is expected to be implemented in a phased manner at Lal Bahadur Shastri airport (Varanasi), Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport (Kolkata), Pune airport and Vijayawada airport. The platform will be operational by the end of 2020.

As per NEC, the platform will allow passengers who opt-in the service to pass through multiple touchpoints in an airport, such as airport entry, security clearance and boarding gate, by verifying their identity through facial recognition.

In addition to the delivery of biometric-based boarding platform, kiosk terminals and biometric-enabled e-gates, NEC will oversee the operation and maintenance of the platform for next seven years.
