Murtuza Kachwala leads the telecom, media and entertainment practice of Protiviti, India. A chartered accountant by qualification, Kachwala is also a certified internal auditor (USA), certified information systems auditor (USA), information systems auditor (DISA, India), ISO 27001 lead auditor (India) and cost and management accountant (India).

He has extensive experience of more than 21 years in internal audit, risk-based internal audit plan development, revenue integration, SAP implementation, internal control framework and SOX compliance and governance in the Middle East and India. He has served in various capacities including as head, internal audit; head, SOX compliance and governance; and quality assurance head for ERP implementation at Vodafone Essar and Hinduja TMT Limited.

When asked about the most memorable assignment of his career, Kachwala says, “Every assignment comes with its own unique challenges and learnings. That said, the most memorable and challenging one was providing quality assurance support to Project Tiger, which involved the setting up of a shared service centre at Ahmedabad for ­Voda­fone India, along with standardisation of procedures.”

According to him, the sector will undergo significant consolidation in the next few years. It will see many positives such as a substantial increase in the number of subscribers, an improvement in the quality of service, and the launch of new products and services.

Kachwala believes in leading by example and setting the tone for the team. He leads a team of about 50 people and strives to bring out their potential because he believes that that is what makes the real difference bet­ween the success and failure of an organisation. “An organisation does not have to worry about clientele if it has trusted and dedicated team players,” he comments.

Kachwala enjoys delivering talks and lectures and has been a speaker at various forums on internal financial control, com­­­panies auditor’s report orde, internal audit, risk and compliance, customer experience management, big data analytics, etc. “Sharing the know­ledge you have is an excellent platform for growing and connecting with like-minded peers,” he says.

Kachwala likes to spend his spare time reading books and listening to music. He treas­u­res the time spent with his family, which includes his parents, a teenage son and a dau­gh­­ter, and his wife, who is actively involved in social and community initiatives.
