The state-owned operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is rolling out an intra-city fibre network in Mumbai and Delhi to provide seamless connectivity to its users.

MTNL, which operates in the Mumbai and Delhi circles, has 4.2 million mobile subscribers and 1.2 million wireline broadband consumers. With an intra-city fibre network the operator aims to create a robust fibre infrastructure for providing enhanced connectivity to its users.

According to PK Purwar, chairman and managing director, MTNL is laying down fibre network in the two circles at a cost of Rs 600,000 to 700,000 per km. The operator aims to boost its revenues by sharing the fibre network with private operators, which could utilise the available infrastructure to offer various services to their subscribers.
