
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Communications and IT to return the entire spectrum in the 800 MHz band for the price determined in the auction. The total value of this spectrum held by MTNL is about Rs 19.37 billion, as per the reserve price recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Currently, MTNL offers mobile services to 128,000 CDMA subscribers in the Delhi and Mumbai circles. The capitulation of CDMA spectrum by MTNL will result in availability of four slots and seven slots of 1.25 MHz of spectrum in the 800 MHz band in the Delhi and Mumbai circles respectively.
MTNL had earlier refused to surrender these frequency airwaves stating that it will utilise them for 4G services, after TRAI recommended that the Department of Telecommunications should take back MTNL?s CDMA spectrum and auction it subsequently
