Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is considering acquiring 51 per cent stake in Zimbabwe’s state-owned landline operator, TelOne, for an undisclosed sum.
The funds will be routed through its Mauritius arm, Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Limited (MTML). It is believed that the Zimbabwe government is looking to offload a 51 per cent stake in TelOne. Further, TelOne?s GSM licence will boost MTNL?s plans to enter the African mobile market.
This will be MTNL’s second attempt to enter Africa. In 2006, the operator?s attempts to obtain a mobile licence in Kenya failed and thereafter, it failed to obtain a controlling stake in Telkom Kenya.
