MTN South Africa plans to build a 3G network in the 900 MHz spectrum band. By utilising the 900 MHz bandwidth, MTN hopes to provide wider coverage with fewer base stations, thereby reducing costs. However, it plans to refarm a portion of its 900 MHz spectrum, currently used for its 2G network, for rural 3G purposes. Nevertheless, in urban areas, 900 MHz will continue to be used exclusively for 2G. The company currently uses the 2,100 MHz band for 3G services.
