Motorola intends to split into two companies, one for mobile devices and the other for network infrastructure. According to officials, the two companies will be publicly listed and will operate separately. The split is expected to take place in 2009 if the necessary approvals come through. The decision follows a review of the company’s mobile phone business conducted by the management team, the board of directors and independent advisers. According to a company statement, the creation of two standalone businesses is expected to take the form of a tax-free distribution of shares to Motorola’s shareholders, resulting in their holding shares of two independent and publicly traded companies.
