According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), more than 45.89 million subscribers opted for mobile number portability (MNP) at the end of April 2012.

During this time, about 4.01 million subscribers changed their operators. As per TRAI, the maximum number of porting requests originated from Karnataka, at 5.11 million in the period under consideration.

Karnataka was followed by Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, with 4.44 million and 4.23 million subscribers respectively opting for the service.

To avail of the service, a customer has to pay Rs 19 to the new operator for porting the number and has to remain with the new operator for at least three months.
