The GSMA and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) have published a report titled, Mobile Economy India 2013. The report provides an overview of the socio-economic impact of the mobile industry in India.

As per the findings of the report, in 2012, the mobile ecosystem contributed 5.3 per cent to the country?s gross domestic product (GDP). The mobile industry directly supported 730,000 jobs and an additional two million jobs in the sales and distribution segment. By 2020, mobile industry is expected to contribute about $400 billion to India?s GDP and support 4.1 million jobs.

The report points out that India is currently the second largest market in the world in terms of the number of subscribers and unique subscribers. The country has a telecom subscriber base of 900 million and a unique subscriber base of 350 million. Going forward, revised spectrum pricing and the increasing adoption of 3G and 4G services is expected to drive broadband growth in the country. By 2017, India is expected to have 107 million and 409 million 3G and 4G users. However, despite encouraging growth, the Indian telecom industry continues to have low penetration and is yet to mature.
