According to a study by global telecom body GSM Association (GSMA) mobile penetration in India is only 26 per cent.
Anne Bouverot, director general, GSMA, says, ?On an average, each user in the country has two SIMs and in terms of unique number of subscribers, there are about 318 million actual users – about 26 per cent of the total population.?
GSMA sees India as the second largest market in the world in terms of mobile connections. As per the data collected by the organisation, India has million mobile connections corresponding to about 71 per cent of the population. However, the unique number of mobile users in the country is much less.
Similarly, the world-wide average SIM (mobile connection) per person is 1.85 which shows that only 45 per cent of the world population is actual mobile users. GSMA estimates that by the end of 2012 the total mobile users globally will stand at 6.8 billion. In fact, global mobile penetration based on total mobile users is set to exceed 100 per cent in 2013.
