According to Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile data revenue surpassed voice revenues in America at the end of fourth quarter of 2013.

The consulting firm states that mobile data service revenue stood at $90 billion in 2012 and accounted for more than 50 per cent of revenues for wireless operators for the fourth quarter ended December 2013.

Customers are increasingly using their smartphones and tablets for streaming and downloading video-intensive content and applications, thereby leading to higher data usage. Further, introduction of affordable 3G and 4G tariff plans by operators is also driving demand for higher data usage.

The consulting firm forecasts that going forward, data packages will further impact voice market as majority of the operators plan to offer voice over long term evolution ? transforming a voice call into a data call.
