The Ministry of Communications and IT has conducted a review of the progress on spectrum sharing and trading guidelines. The ministry instructed DoT to examine recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on the issue keeping in view the present and future market potential of the telecom sector.
Spectrum sharing will allow telecom companies to share their unutilised frequency airwaves with other service providers in the same telecom circle. Earlier, in 2014, TRAI had recommended sharing of all categories of frequency airwaves held by operators including spectrum allocated at old price of
Rs 16.58 billion or assigned without auction. The regulator had also recommended allowing trading of spectrum.
