Meta and Reliance Industries have announced an expansion of their strategic partnership through an agreement to establish an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Under the arrangement, Reliance will build a data centre with an initial capacity of 168 megawatts (MW), which Meta will lease, with options to scale further.

The facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, with Meta covering the full cost of energy and water supporting the site.

The investment deepens a partnership between the two companies that spans connectivity, commerce and AI innovation. In 2020, Meta made a landmark $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms, aimed at accelerating connectivity and supporting small business growth across India. The two companies subsequently formed a joint venture to bring Meta’s open-source AI models to Indian enterprises and developers. The data centre agreement marks the next stage of the collaboration, extending it to physical infrastructure powering Meta’s products and AI capabilities in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing digital economies.

Alongside the data centre announcement, Meta has contracted nearly 1 gigawatt of new clean and renewable energy in India through agreements with two energy providers. CleanMax will supply 837 MW of new solar and wind capacity across Rajasthan and Karnataka, bringing the cumulative capacity announced with the firm to over 900 MW. Meanwhile, Fourth Partner Energy will provide 88 MW of new solar and wind capacity across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

As per Meta, the renewable energy agreements, combined with Reliance’s efforts to support the Jamnagar facility with clean power, reflect a commitment to India’s clean energy ecosystem and are consistent with the company’s global goal of matching all operations with 100 per cent clean and renewable energy.
