In a response to Twitter’s recent request for seeking a minimum three-month extension for ensuring compliance with the new IT rules, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has raised concerns about Twitter not setting up compliance mechanism in India on its own.

Further, MeitY has asked the company to comply with the new rules. In this regard, the ministry said that, while, Twitter has a large user base in India and earns significant revenue from its Indian operations, it is most reluctant to appoint an India-based grievance redressal officer and mechanism, chief compliance officer and nodal officer to whom Twitter users can complain, when they are subjected to offensive tweets.

Recently, Twitter requested MeitY to consider a minimum of three-month extension for the company to implement the new intermediary guidelines on IT rules.
