Maxis Communications Bhd has appointed Ericsson (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to manage its 3G telephony services in a multi-millionringgit contract. This makes Maxis the first operator in Asia to employ a managed service operator while managing its own second-generation network. Under the agreement, Ericsson will operate Maxis’s 3G network for 18 months, after which operation of the network will be transferred to Maxis. Ericsson will be responsible for extensive and continuous knowledge transfer in 3G operations, including competence training in other locations where Ericsson is involved in similar operations.
