Maxis Communications, which has a majority stake in Aircel, has applied for mobile licences in 11 circles including Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala and Maharashtra.

Currently, the service provider is operating in five circles ?? West Bengal, Orissa, Assam, the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir. It is also in the process of rolling out services in Bihar and Himachal Pradesh. The company has emerged as the frontrunner to acquire BPL Communications, which offers mobile services in Mumbai, along with Reliance, the Tatas and other competitors. DoT has reportedly cleared the proposal to issue a letter of intent to Aircel in eight out of 11 circles.
