According to a recent study by Assam Police and Cyber Peace Foundation (CPF), majority of the internet users in Assam have faced some form of cyber-attacks in the last one year.

Earlier in October 2020, Assam Police & CPF also undertook a survey study to gauge the level of awareness around cyber security in Assam. The study found there exists a high level of awareness among the people of Assam for cyber crimes.

As per the survey report, the respondents had a deep understanding of the various cybercrimes. As per the survey, 70 per cent of respondents were aware of the cybercrimes committed with the intent of stealing the data from computer hardware; 71 per cent were aware of crimes such as online harassment; 78 per cent aware of hacking; 64 per cent aware of fake news and 68 per cent were aware of online impersonation.

Moreover, the study noted that 62 per cent of the respondents knew that cyber crime is reported at the police station and 58 per cent of respondents were also aware that Assam Police had dedicated cyber police stations and police personnel to deal with cyber crimes.

However, only 16 per cent of the respondents stated that they have reported to the police when exposed to cybercrime. Meanwhile, around 32 per cent of the respondents preferred reporting to the website and 22 per cent chose to do nothing at all.
