During the past one year, telecom operators signed several network upgrade and modernisation contracts with leading telecom equipment vendors for delivering high quality services to customers, boost their networking capabilities and increase their scope of services.

5G emerged as a key focus area as several players from the operator and vendor communities joined hands to accelerate the preparatory process for bringing the next-generation technology to India. MoUs were also signed between state governments and operators and vendors for the implementation of the BharatNet project and the development of communications infrastructure under the Smart Cities Mission. The defence sector also partnered with telecom players to augment its communications infrastructure.

Technologies like machine learning (ML), internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), among others, attracted significant attention during the year. A number of contracts and deals were initiated for the development of these technologies and the exploration of use cases around them.
