Kerala will become the first state in the country to have full broadband connectivity under the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) project. According to the Ministry of Communications and IT, the state is scheduled to become digitally connected with optical fibre cable (OFC) by end-March 2015. The ministry added that Idukki district of the state has already been completely connected by OFC with the other districts to follow next.

Further, the ministry has stated that the work of laying cables under the NOFN project is progressing fast in the other southern states of Karnataka and Seemandhra as well.

As per the timeline of the NOFN project, the government is aiming to connect 250,000 gram panchayats in the entire country through OFC by December 2016. With the completion of the project, the government envisages to provide bandwidth of 100 mbps to each gram panchayat to facilitate broadband services.
