Kapil Sibal, Minister of Telecommunications and IT, is believed to have asked the Department of Telecommunications? (DoT) vigilance units (or Term Cells) to oversee the security of telecom networks.
Therefore, it is believed that over the next few months, the Term Cells will be able to tap any mobile network through an intranet backbone.
Sibal has also reportedly advocated a larger role for DoT’s vigilance units to mandatorily certify all network equipment procured by telecom operators. This implies that the vigilance wing will be responsible for ensuring mobile phone networks are free of bugs, spyware or malware that can surreptitiously monitor voice and data traffic and even derail networks.
