As per industry sources, Jio Satellite Communications Limited (JSCL), the satcom arm of Reliance Jio, has obtained a letter of intent (LoI) for global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) services from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

With this, the company can set up and operate the GMPCS services in the licensed service areas and can provide high-speed broadband-from-space services. The licences are for a period of 20 years (from the date of its grant after fulfilling stipulated conditions). Meanwhile, the offering under GMPCS include voice and data services via satellite.

Earlier in February 2022, Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) and SES Luxembourg, a global satellite communications company, formed a joint venture (JV), Jio Space Technology Limited, to deliver broadband services in India through satellites. Jio Space Technology is developing extensive gateway infrastructure in India to provide satcom services within the country and will use multi-orbit space networks using a combination of geostationary (GEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations.
