According to the financial year (FY) 25 annual report message from Reliance Industries chairman and managing director (MD), Reliance Jio is playing an increasingly pivotal role as the digital services engine for both the group and India’s economy.
Jio has become the world’s largest data network, with 488 million users as of March 2025. Of these, 191 million are connected via advanced 5G services. This rapid transformation is accelerating India’s digital ecosystem, with Jio’s dense nationwide network enabling extensive online activity and driving economic development.
Furthermore, Jio’s ambitions extend beyond its current capabilities. The company is actively pursuing research and development in 6G technology, aiming to become a global leader in the next phase of ultra-high-speed connectivity. Simultaneously, it is building its own satellite communication platform. Strategic alliances, including one with SpaceX, are paving the way for Starlink broadband services in India.
Currently, Jio handles around 60 per cent of India’s data traffic, with monthly volumes surpassing 17 exabytes. It has extended high-speed broadband to roughly 18 million homes, capturing 85 per cent of all new home broadband subscriptions in the sector for the latest FY.
In addition, recognising the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI), Jio is working with the government’s India AI (INDIAai) initiative. The company is investing in new technologies aimed at achieving the world’s lowest AI inferencing costs, reinforcing India’s position as a hub for scalable and affordable AI infrastructure.
Financially, Jio has sustained strong growth momentum. In first quarter (Q1) of FY26, net profit rose 25 per cent year-on-year (YoY), while operational revenue increased 19 per cent to Rs 350.32 billion. Average revenue per user grew 15 per cent to Rs 208.8, demonstrating Jio’s ability to monetise its expanding customer base and ensure sustainable growth.
Moreover, sustainability is playing a key part. The company aims to power all its operations with renewable electricity by FY 2030, aligning with Reliance’s broader goal of achieving net carbon neutrality by 2035. At present, its energy efficiency per unit of data traffic is about 30 per cent of the global average.
