According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio lost over 19 million wireless subscribers in September 2021. This has dragged its gross user base down to 424.83 million.

Jio had a massive clean-up of low-paying and dormant customers. The operator’s mobile user base reduced by 20.7 million to around 1.16 billion in September, 2021.

Meanwhile, Airtel added 0.27 million wireless subscribers in September 2021, taking its gross user base to 354.46 million. Vodafone Idea (Vi) witnessed a loss 1.07 million wireless customers during the same period.

Jio lost nearly 6.6 million users in rural India in September 2021, whereas Airtel and Vi suffered fewer losses at 0.78 million and 0.74 million, respectively, during the same period. Jio’s rural mobile user base fell to 184.29 million while Airtel and Vi’s to 169.99 million and 137.21 million respectively.

TRAI data showed Airtel and Vi marginally widened customer market shares to 30.4 per cent and 23.15 per cent, respectively, in September 2021. During the same period, Jio’s customer market base narrowed to 36.43 per cent.
